Schlitz Audubon Nature Center:
Design Incorporating Natural Resources

This facility received the LEED Gold Award for incorporating natural ventilation, day lighting, passive solar heating and cooling, use of recycled and recyclable materials, and reliance on renewable energy sources. Not only is the building a wonderful space, but it also increases awareness of the use of sustainable building techniques and materials.

Many of the timbers were cut on site, dragged out of the woods with horses; hand peeled and allowed to dry for a year before using them for the majority of the building’s structure.

A short walk through the woods is the Schlitz Audubon Pavilion which offers a unique structure featuring a warped timber roof with timber decking and tree columns.
