Milwaukee Public Market: Structural Challenges Bring Great Rewards
Milwaukee’s market hall includes 24 food vendors, seasonal outdoor farmers market open in summer months, and employs 120 full-time people and annual sales of $10.5 million.
The Architect was very particular regarding the truss work on this project. This required our Engineer to work very closely with the Architect.
The complicated structure boasts exposed truss frames with columns and part of the truss’ outside of the building envelope. This challenge involves providing a thermal break in the span of the structure.
The other challenge involved hanging the balcony from the roof structure. The challenges were met and the structure features wood, steel, glass and brick which not only honors the Third Ward in Milwaukee but also other traditional public markets throughout the country.
