Clients sometimes ask us, “What sets you apart from other Engineering firms?” The answer can be seen in how we embrace the work-life balance as part of our culture. Our clients and our work are very important to us, almost as important as the dedicated engineers and staff who do that work. When we need to come together and support one of our own, it is not only natural, it is expected.
Our electrical engineer José Franco is experiencing the crucial support of his Harwood family in maintaining his work/life balance. José’s 2 year old son, Juan Pablo, was recently diagnosed with Leukemia (AML). Juan Pablo just started receiving round three of his treatments at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, and he’s blowing everyone away with his continued strength, strong spirit and bigger than life smiles. Because José has the support of his work team, he is able to take time off when he needs to be there for Juan Pablo, his three other children, and his wife Herlinda. Knowing that things are going to be taken care of at the office during this time means José can be the supportive daddy and husband his family needs right now.
This is not the first time one of Harwood’s employees needed our support. In 2017, our lighting designer Erik Kopp discovered he needed a liver transplant. The staff at Harwood donated vacation days, contributed money for medical expenses, and supported Erik when he needed us. Today, Erik is back working at Harwood full time and is so grateful for all the support he received from his work family. Helping José and Erik won’t be the last time Harwood assists one of its own; fortunately, our employees know that when they are facing life issues that could affect their work-life balance, Harwood will be there to make the balancing act achievable.
Our support journey for José and his family started with volunteering to answer phones at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin annual WKLH Miracle Marathon. Team Juan Pablo accepted monetary pledges to help with all the services Children’s provides to its patients and families.
Today we made a donation of collected toys for the Juan Pablo Inspire Awesomeness Toy Drive. Games, coloring books, race cars and cuddly friends were all brought in to stock the toy closet at Children’s Hospital. When a child receives treatment or needs a smile to help a hurt, they can go to the toy closet and pick out a new item.
Harwood is proud that we could help Juan Pablo with his wish to keep this closet stocked with great choices. Children’s Hospital is a longtime client of Harwood and TOGETHER WE MAKE GREAT THINGS HAPPEN. Thank you to José and his family for sharing this time in their lives and allowing us to tell their story.
